Week 2

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

In Aesthetics: Philosophy of the Arts I learned the idea of beauty, the role of aesthetics, and different views of aesthetics.
In aesthetic experience can evolve from human evolution I learner aesthetics relation to human evolution and the brains interaction with art.

2. Which philosopher's theroy on aesthetics do you feel is most important? Be sure to mention the philosphers name, era (time in history), and contribtion to the aesthetic theory in your response.

I like Kants 18th-century theory. Going against "practical reason"  with "human action". I feel it is important because he doesn't't look at aesthetics as something mathematical or something to be broken down. He sees it as "sensibility and reason are brought together by reason and imagination". Through our own individual experiences or lack of we build our opinion of art. Aesthetics are subjective.

3. What do you think about Changeux and Ramachandran scientific view of aesthetics and art? What was the most interesting fact you discovered from each speakers lecture?

I think there view is incredible. I would never really think that aesthetics was so deep and complex.
I like how Changeux explains how aesthetics are related to the conscience and how Ramachandran's 8 laws of aesthetics.

4. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

The book did not go into detail about aesthetics. It gave a quick overview. The videos went into great depth and detail. Really elaborating on what was not put into detail. I really liked the different theories that the first video went into detail on as well as the idea of how the brain interacts with art in the second video.

5. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the topics in your reading?

They give a lot of background and in depth information that back up the small inserts of information in the text.  The specific facts, dates, philosophers, and research really help reinforce what the text put simply. I really got a better understanding of the different theories and how they are different and how they evolved into what we believe aesthetics is today.
