Exploring Line

1. What was it like using your hand as subject matter for a drawing?
It something that I see and use every day. A familiar shape with familiar lines.

2. What media did you select - pencil or charcoal? Why?
I chose pencil. I felt I would have more control and that I could more easily fix anything I didn't like.

3. How did it feel to create a drawing with your non-dominant hand?
My dominate hand reached for the pencil many times without even thinking about it.It was kind of uncomfortable. I didn't really want to continue drawing with my opposite hand at all after coming to a result I found good enough.

4. Compare and contrast your final drawings. Do you think they are successful studies?
I don't like to draw in general but the look of the first drawing is distinctively clearer and more defined.  The first drawing being more accurate the second being more free and loose. I think that this was a great exercise. It really was strange to use my non-dominate hand.

5. Would you consider using your non-dominant hand to create artwork in the future?
Most likely not. It was really uncomfortable and I wasn't really happy with what was coming out onto the paper.

Installaion

1. Step 3:
A.  Installation art is art in which the space itself becomes a part of the work. Viewers are drawn into the work and are able to interact with is by being in it. Some work is meant to make you think of objects or situations in new ways. They are works that become unique in or with the space they occupy.

B.  Anything can be used in an installation. You can find such things as materials used in traditional artworks, video footage, trash, everyday objects, and even people.
C.  Something to entertain, invoke thoughts, make a statement. To break away from what we traditionally see as art and share a vision of a different perspective.
D.  I really like Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s “The Gates. I have seen many images of this installation before and always wondered when it must have been like to have see it set up in Central Park. I think The shade of orange that was used to the way the fabric moves in the wind is really nice. IOT seemed to really add life to an area that so many people pass though daily.

2. Step 4:
A.  I really like the pieces that involve textiles in different ways. I guess it’s because I am a fashion major. I really like Eva Hesse’s “Contingent” found on the website. I really like the color, texture, and repetition of the piece. It really draws my eye to it. I would love to just walk all the way around this installation.

B.  I would like to explore nature. I love being outside and feel a connection with nature.

C.  I will use tissue paper and thread.

D. This installation will be in my apartment for my roommate as well as visitors to enjoy.

3.

4.Paper orbs hang from overhead in repetition. Each orb contains a different range of colors. The orbs are slighly different sizes and are hung at different heights. The orbs look stiff and rigid.
5. The orbs can be interpreted as flowers or a sign of spring. As winter is nearing it gives hope for warmer weather. The bright bold colors liven up the plain white walls. It creates a sense of space knowing that the orbs are three dimensional and can be maneuvered around. When a gust of air catches the orbs they sway in a natural motion. The first thing that comes to mind when I look at them is pollen floating in the summer air.

6. I wanted something fun and attractive for my installation. I chose the particular location for its visibility upon entry to the apartment. It was fun to assemble the orbs and decide how they would be arranged.

Reviewing Peer Responses to Artwork

1.http://aed200buffstateart.blogspot.com/
 http://kingcarrera1.blogspot.com/
2.
Both students did a great job at finding the elements and principles in everyday life. I don't think the principles and elements are really a set thing you have to look for or set up and are going to automatically be everywhere.  You can look deeper into any of the images and find any element of principle you want to find.

3. In the first blog they use two that I used. We both felt a connection to "Yo Yos" by W. Thielbaud though we both chose "The Old mill" Van Gogh, 1888, oil on canvas for different reasons.

In the second blog three where used that I also used. We both had chosen Bucolic Landscape, Dyanism of Dog on a Leash, and Carcass of Beef but we chose them for different reasons.

4. They didn't really select any images for any reason beyond any that I may have had to pick my own. They didn't really bring up any points about any of the pieces that i found interesting.

5. I do think peer review is valuable to see what others are doing and to see them react to your own work. The only problem is its usually just comments like "looks good" and really isn't constructive.

6. The comments are mostly just complimentary. It is encouraging to see.

Week Six - Blog: Video Review

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

Through the Eyes of  a Sculptor
Some sculptures take entire teams to create them.
There can be quite a few steps in the process of creating a sculpture.
The artist selects the perfect piece of stone for the piece.

Glass and Ceramics
Gave very detailed processes of creating work in two different glass making tequnies and ceramics.

Installation Art

An instalation is something that you get put into in  way. They are an envirnment.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

They touch on the information that the book gives and gives a more detailed look at each process.

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the topics: Sculpture, Installation, and Craft?

They gave a great visual to the creation process that the book could not. No matter how detailed a description actually seeing something happen really puts it into prospective and makes it easy to understand.

Gallery Visit

A.) Which artworks make an impact or impression on me? Why?

I love the colors of this piece and the clean lines. It really caught my eye as I walked past.

The simplisity of the bold black lines really stood out. The bright yellow hair really pulled me in.

This peace was so different from the rest. It wasn't a portrait or a landscape. It was bright and grusome and really left me thinking.

B.) Which artworks do I feel a connection with? Why?
My favorite animal is the cow. The painting is absolutely beautiful to me. From the form of the cow to the color of the field it is laying in.

This piece was really inspiring to me. The clean crisp colors and repeating circular shape. I really was drawn into it.

This was one of my favorite pieces. All the little minute details. I really like to get close up to a painting and this one was just amazing.

C.) Which artworks would I like to know more about? Why?

This piece intrigues me. The way it captures motions really is incredible.

I would like to learn more about Van Gogh's work in general. His painting style is something that I envy.

Works of art that are made up of solid blocks of color I feel like I don't fully understand. I feel like its pretty but is kind of cheap.

Logo Development

1. I had fun drafting different takes on the idea I had. I decided to illustrate it because I have been taught how to use illustrator and though it would look nice and somewhat professional. I usually hate drawing anything. This was simple and kind of relaxing.

2. I decides I wanted something that was a take on my initials. I knew I wanted to keep it simple and very me. I was born it the fall and love fall colors so I already knew what colors I wanted to use. I came up with the big swoosh just by letting my pencil do what ever it wanted.  I started to see a J, for Julia, coming through and really liked where it was going. Lastly I added a circle to represent an O for my last make and drew inspiration from my rabbit Mochi to finish it off creating an R effect for my middle initial.

3. No matter how much I hate drawing if I just let my mind be open I can come up with something I like.

4. I find myself to be a creative person  with a creative background and really didn't find the materials to be useful. I am sure for someone who has less experience with creative processes they were a great help.
